Day Camps

2024 Summer Day Camps are now live!

Summer camps are available from June 10 through end of August, for children ages 6-10.

Wilderness Awakening Day Camps serve to provide children ages 6-10 the rich pleasure of urban wilderness immersion. It is through my experience prioritizing time with children in nature that I have come to this immersion as a growing need for our society. In a culture whose time is heavily compartmentalized and inundated with screen time and obligations, the staggering divide between nature and children creates, what Richard Louv, in Last Child in the Woods, calls a “nature-deficit.”

As a Montessori guide, I have come to acknowledge the unique nature of the individual pace and creative process present in all children. When allowed extended guided unstructured time, children have the opportunity to unlock newfound concentration, creativity, self expression, sense of belonging to the natural world and one another, and an overall sense of peace. This is a priority of the camp design, and one which differentiates this camp from other nature camps.

-Julia Beasley, Director of Wilderness Awakening

Each day we’ll begin with a circle to ground in, share stories and set guidelines. We will explore different landscapes in the park, venturing into the woods to set up a day camp somewhere within. The children may choose what feels good for them, whether it’s drawing, building, climbing, exploring, bouldering, hammocking, cairn or mandala art, fairy house building, or imaginative play.

After a picnic lunch, we continue our work and play through the afternoon, changing sites as needed. We will utilize the local outdoor park shelter in the case of a rainstorm.

The last part of our day we will share reflections, gratitude, journal, and snack!

Hammocks, picnic blanket, journals, art materials and supplemental water will be provided.

"My child came home dirty and joyous every day. She loved collaborative problem solving, freedom to explore, and the connections she made with the staff."

Kind Words

"Mal loved the camp and it was so good for him last summer. It was wonderful to see him become independent and enjoy the outdoors and overcome anxiety. I grew up playing in the woods, enjoying nature, and catching toads— I want that for him. He needs something different from school that still enables him to grow."

- Cindy Harley

“Our son participated in Julia’s camp last summer and it was a very memorable experience for him. He loved the freedom and exploratory nature of the week spent outside building forts, climbing and playing. Highly recommend Wilderness Awakening camps!”
